Senior Hurling
Hard luck to our Senior hurlers who lost out to Belmont on Sunday in the 2nd round of the Championship in St Brendan’s Park, Birr by 1-20 to 0-17. K/K played against the breeze in the first half but James Gorman and Conor Mahon got the first two points of the game to put K/K ahead. It was to be the only time we held the lead in the game as Belmont hit the next five points in a row from the 5th to the 11th minute. The sides traded the next few scores and by the 25th minute Belmont lead by 0-8 to 0-5. Belmont went on to hit the next four in a row before Ciaran Slevin pointed in injury time to leave it 0-12 to 0-6 at the break. Belmont continued the second half as they finished the first as they got four of the first five points to extend their advantage to 0-16 to 0-7 by the 35th minute. The sides traded the next six points between them as Belmont retained their nine point advantage with less than 15 minutes to go. K/K began to battle back with Ciaran Slevin hitting five of the next seven points of the game to reduce the gap with points also from Peter Geraghty and a long-range free from Conor Slevin. Dylan Murray’s point in the last minute of normal time left just a goal between the teams. K/K dropped a couple of balls into the square but to no avail as the goal eventually came at the other end when Belmont broke and finished to the net in the fifth minute of injury time to seal the victory. The championship will now break until Offaly’s involvement in the All-Ireland series ends. Team & Scorers: Conor Slevin (0-1), James Geraghty, Ger Healion, Óisin Mahon, Kevin Grogan, Damien Kilmartin, Jordan Quinn, Ciarán Slevin (0-9, 6f, 1 ’65), Cillian Kiely, James Gorman (0-2), Conor Mahon (0-2), Peter Geraghty (0-1), Thomas Geraghty (0-1), Cathal Mahon, Dylan Murray (0-1).
