Hard luck to our Intermediate footballers who lost out to Shannonbridge in the first round of the championship on Saturday evening in Ferbane. A slow start left us a big mountain to climb but to the lad’s credit they battled on and had a positive second half performance. Shannonbridge hit two goals inside the opening ten minutes for a 2-4 to 0-1 lead with Shane Guinan getting the K/K point. They added their third goal in the 15th minute with Stephen Leonard getting a couple of points for K/K either side of the goal. Conor Lowry kicked a point with the last kick of the half as Shannonbridge led by 3-8 to 0-4 at the break. Shannonbridge started the second half well with four unanswered points before Sean Tooher, who had come outfield for the second half in a switch with Donal Rigney, kicked two very good points for K/K. Shannonbridge added another couple before Philip Cooney finished to the net for K/K’s first goal in the 44th minute. Our second goal from Conor Lowry in the 52nd minute left it 3-16 to 2-7. Both teams had further goal chances well saved before Shannonbridge got their fourth in injury time for a 4-19 to 2-9 win. Team & Scorers: Sean Tooher (0-3), Cormac Dunne, Ciaran Moore, Peter Grogan, Peter Troy, Damien Kilmartin, Eoghan Donoghue, Conor Quinn (0-1), Karl Guinan, Stephen Leonard (0-2), Shane Guinan (0-1), Shane Melia, Conor Lowry (1-1), Bryan Mullen, Philip Cooney (1-1). Well done to our Intermediate hurlers who began their Championship campaign with a 3-9 to 3-7 win over Birr in wet and tough conditions in Kinnitty on Easter Monday. K/K got off to a great start with an early goal for Lochlann Kavanagh. Points followed from Karl Guinan (2) and Conor Lowry for a 1-3 to 0-0 lead. K/K failed to score for over 15 minutes as Birr fought back with 1-2 of their own before a brace of frees from Conor Quinn left K/K three ahead again. Birr got their second goal of the game as half time approached to leave the teams level at 1-5 to 2-2 at the break. The sides remained close midway through the second half at 1-8 to 2-4 with points from Conor Quinn (free) and Shane Guinan (2) before Conor Lowry finished to the net for K/K’s second goal. Birr responded with a point from a free to leave three in it again. Shane Guinan’s goal in the 50th minute put K/K six ahead and headed for victory. Birr struck their third goal with the last puck of the game as K/K held on for a two point win. Team & Scorers: Mark Gleeson, Cathal Gath, Chris Guinan, Owen Dunne, Mark Leonard, Mikey Ryan, Alan Spain, Shane Melia, Shaun Lowry, Rodge Deegan, Karl Guinan (0-2), Conor Quinn (0-4f), Lochlann Kavanagh (1-0), Shane Guinan (1-2), Conor Lowry (1-1).
