Our U20 footballers played three championship games over the past week. Their first game was against St Michaels in the Preliminary Round on Friday 16th in Rhode in which they had an excellent 6-7 to 1-11 victory. They lined out in the 1st round then against St Rynagh’s on Monday 19th in Mountbolus and had another good victory winning by 4-13 to 0-5. They then qualified for the quarter final against Clara on Friday night last in Mountbolus. Clara’s first half goal was the difference at the break as they led 1-3 to 0-3 with a brace of frees from Conor Lowry and a point for Cathal Donoghue. Conor Lowry got another free on the resumption to reduce the gap to two before Clara tagged on another three points in a row to move five clear. Dylan Leonard got a point for K/K to leave just four in it with fifteen minutes to go but K/K couldn’t get the goal which they needed and Clara finished the strongest to run out winners on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-6. Well done to the players and management for their efforts over the couple of months. Hard luck to the Offaly senior hurlers, especially our K/K representatives, who came very close to defeating Kilkenny on Bank Holiday Monday last eventually losing out by 0-24 to 1-19. Well done to the Offaly senior footballers on their excellent 1-20 to 1-14 victory over Westmeath on Sunday in Mullingar which secured their status in Division 3 for another year.
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Pat Troy, life president of the club on Thursday in Virginia, USA. Whilst Pat left Kilcormac in 1962 to begin a new life in Washington, he never forgot his roots and was a frequent visitor back home. His generosity to the local area here was no more evident than his kind sponsorship, along with his wife Bernie, of a summer camp in Kilcormac for many years for the children of the parish. In 2011, we hosted an U16 hurling tournament which was also kindly sponsored by Pat and Bernie and they were in attendance to make the presentations of medals, cup and shield afterwards that day. He was a passionate supporter of Kilcormac/Killoughey and Offaly and always attended games when he was home for a visit. We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Bernie, son Patrick, daughter Kathleen, extended family and friends. Pat’s funeral will take place in Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday April 7th. We would also like to extend our sincere sympathy to the Feighery family on the death of Anne Feighery, Ballincloghan, Kilcormac and to the Kershaw family on the death of Billy Kershaw, Lumcloon, Cloghan. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh siad.
