It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Pat Troy, life president of the club on Thursday in Virginia, USA. Whilst Pat left Kilcormac in 1962 to begin a new life in Washington, he never forgot his roots and was a frequent visitor back home.
His generosity to the local area here was no more evident than his kind sponsorship, along with his wife Bernie, of a summer camp in Kilcormac for many years for the children of the parish. In 2011, we hosted an U16 hurling tournament which was also kindly sponsored by Pat and Bernie and they were in attendance to make the presentations of medals, cup and shield afterwards that day. He was a passionate supporter of Kilcormac/Killoughey and Offaly and always attended games when he was home for a visit.
We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Bernie, son Patrick, daughter Kathleen, extended family and friends. Pat’s funeral will take place in Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday April 7th.
Our Senior hurlers began their campaign with a 0-16 to 1-13 draw with Coolderry in St Brendan’s Park, Birr on Saturday last. There was little between the sides throughout the game, points from Thomas Geraghty, Ciarán Slevin (2 frees) and Cillian Kiely (free) left K/K 0-4 to 0-2 ahead after 8 minutes. Coolderry then struck for the game’s only goal a minute later which was followed by a point as they went into a 1-3 to 0-4 lead. Thomas Geraghty landed a long range point to cut the gap to one again. Coolderry were on top over the next ten minutes as they outscored us by 0-4 to 0-1 with a very good score from James Gorman leaving us trailing by 1-7 to 0-6 after 25 minutes. We finished the half very strongly with five unanswered points, four of them coming in injury time – Ciarán Slevin (2 frees), Thomas Geraghty, James Gorman and Cillian Kiely to go in leading by 0-11 to 1-7 at the break. Both sides were guilty of wayward shooting in the second half as the wides clocked up for both teams. The sides exchanged the first couple of points of the half before a point from Dylan Murray in the 49th minute put K/K 0-14 to 1-9 ahead. Coolderry responded with the next two to level it up again. Ciarán Slevin hit another free in the 56th minute but Coolderry responded yet again with another couple of points to move 1-13 to 0-15 ahead heading into injury time. Ciarán Slevin hit another free, his eighth point of the day, in injury time as the teams shared a point each. Team & Scorers: Conor Slevin, Óisin Mahon, Ger Healion, James Geraghty, Damien Kilmartin, Cillian Kiely (0-2, 1f), Jordan Quinn, Thomas Geraghty (0-3), Ciarán Slevin (0-8, 7f), James Gorman (0-2), Kevin Grogan, Cathal Mahon, Stephen Leonard, Peter Geraghty, Dan Currams.
